custom work

This page features a selection of projects I have done on a commission or special-order basis for customers wanting to set aside a special piece from their collection and/or to utilize a display space that isn't ideally served by my standard designs.

Shadow boxes

Let’s begin with a shadowbox created to display four campaign sleeve shields, a cloth German Cross in Gold, and a Tank Destruction Badge:

The bayonet and grenade motif - reminiscent of a General Assault badge or Close-Combat clasp - were crafted from walnut while the field gray matboard affords a very suitable backdrop for these hard-won awards.

The navy blue moire’ silk backing fabric affords a nice contrast to the light wood and various metal finishes found on the badges and dagger.

Here is a closer look at the mount for the U-Boat badge showing how the slot, carefully fitted for the pin, allows it to remain firmly in place while still being easily removed if desired.

showcase themed display

This themed display uses a five-sided showcase to present a World War Two U.S. Army Air Corps officer’s visor hat (note the famous “Fifty Mission Crush”) along with a collection of insignia, decorations and ancillary items:

This image, taken from a slightly different angle, gives a better view of the headphones, the iconic “Lucky Strike Green” cigarette pack & Zippo lighter box, a silk escape and evasion map, and a host of other items that were part and parcel of an American airman’s time-in-service.

Topping the display case with a scale model of a B-17 Flying Fortress with 8th Air Force markings seems a very fitting way to complete effort…I hope you agree!

Hanging wall display

This case – designed to hang on a wall – is a relatively simple affair putting forth a Luftwaffe Paratrooper qualification badge, a 2nd class Iron Cross, a Kreta cuff title, and  a Fallschrimspringer (parachutist’s) gravity knife with stunning walnut grip plates that blend well with the walnut used to construct the case.

Wooden stands

This walnut stand for the infamous World War Two German M24 "Potato Masher" hand grenade was done at the request of a good customer and has since been added to my product line:

It serves to illustrate that your displays don't have to be complicated and that even a relatively common item can be well-presented, making it much more interesting to even a casual observer.
